The new ALAS collection draws inspiration from the place in which the garments are made, a land of varied landscapes and ancient cultures: India. The clothing and its origins are inextricably linked. Our travels opened our eyes to the poetry of India. Long train journeys and rickshaw rides led us to the source of the organic cotton, the mills and weaving co-ops, the colourful dye houses and screen printing workshops. In between we passed endless fields, coconut trees, mountain temples and bright, crowded cities. We also came to learn mysterious tales from centuries past.
One such story is that of the treasured Koh-i-Noor diamond, which translates to ‘Mountain of Light’. It was found in Andra Pradesh almost 1000 years ago and passed through many hands over the dynasties, its brilliant facets reflecting faces throughout history. Similarly, when an ALAS garment reaches its completion, we like to consider the many hands that it has passed through in the process of manufacture, every fingertip leaving a distinct touch to the final product. We hope you enjoy this summer!
