This week we escape with Holly McCauley, a woman of many talents. Starting her career in publication design, she is now the art director at Smack Bang Designs and a freelance stylist. As far as we're concerned, she's living the dream...
Holly gives us a tour of her new house with the Unisex Midnight Forest Tee and the Mountain Stripe Pants, to talk about how she loves to escape, by getting as close to the ocean and/or mountains as possible. We also discuss forcing creativity, and how to wind down after the end of a hectic week.
Your work is very beautiful and diverse. What is your background – How did you get into doing what you do?
Thanks! I do a bit of everything, which makes my current job as art director at Smack Bang Designs super fun and diverse. My background is in publication design, I started my career at Frankie Magazine, followed by Penguin Books. Along the way I picked up a love of styling and having a more hands on approach to work. I’m able to freelance as a stylist and publication designer in my down time, so I’ve managed to continue to do lots of the things I love. Jack of all trades, master of…some?
What inspires you to create?
That’s a hard one, I’m not one of those people who “must be creative all the time” that thought never really crosses my mind. I guess it’s just second nature - I like to live and enjoy my life as if I’m writing my own story. Also, you gotta pay those bills, and, right now, I’m pretty happy that being creative can cover my rent.
What is the most special thing about what you do?
I love getting to work with great people everyday and being able to expand my extended community through common goals. Being creatively inclined opens you up to meeting lost of lovely souls, even if it’s just to grab a beer and talk shit. I’m lucky that I can do this with lots of my close girlfriends too, who all share a similar state of mind regrading creativity and work/life balance.
What is the best way to wind down after a hectic week?
These days, all I want to do is walk home from work, go for a dip in the ocean. Oh, and Friday’s more often than not require a beverage, preferably one with a cocktail swizzle stick in it, but I can guarantee I’ll be in bed by 8pm.
Where is your number one place to escape?
Camping down on the South Coast with my man, Pretty Beach is the spot. Although, now we're in winter, I’m keen to find a little log cabin the mountains somewhere - any suggestions? We are definitely not city people, so any escape from Sydney is a good one!
Do you have any evening rituals for a great nights sleep?
I don’t need any! As soon as my head hits the pillow, I’m out. But I’m a sucker for a day spent in the sun, followed by a good meal, good company, a warm shower and fresh sheets. Nothing will send you off to sleep faster than a day well spent.
